“Writing an article for university having no clue what so ever… LIKE A BOSS … if you know what I mean” by K.A.

Sentences like the one above can be found in the comical and certainly politically incorrect world of 9GAG, a user-oriented website which was founded in 2008 by a Hong Kong-based startup.

However, 9GAG is not only about phrases or sentences. In fact, one can also find for example pictures of cute animals but most of all, Memes.

A Meme is an idea that is propagated through the World Wide Web. The idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, picture, website, hash tag, or just a word or phrase, such as intentionally misspelling the word “more” as “moar” or “the” as “teh”. The meme may spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, news sources, or other web-based services. An Internet meme may stay the same or may evolve over time, by chance or through commentary, imitations, parody, or by incorporating news accounts about itself. Internet memes can evolve and spread extremely rapidly, sometimes reaching worldwide popularity within a few days.

In short, a Meme is connected with pure humor, sarcasm and the manifestation of everyday life. Viewers find it amusing as it relates to emotions and feelings on certain topics that can be shared by everyone.

On 9GAG anyone is free to post, vote and comment on the numerous images present on the website. 9GAG has now reached an incredibly high number of visitors. In fact, it has been estimated that around 2 billion pages are viewed per month.

9GAG is tightly integrated with Facebook and Facebook’s commenting system. It allows user to embed content directly on Facebook and the Fan Page has about 3.2 Million Likes. This integration supports the viral spreading of trends over the Internet and gives the content creator free rein to their inspiration. However, users can post only twice every 24 hours.

Another interesting feature as far as 9GAG is concerned is the one called “Admiring”. This function allows users to see on their homepage the posts they have “Admired”.

The popularity of 9GAG has led to an unwanted side effect.

Almost anyone has the possibility to create his or her own Memes within a few clicks. Additionally, a mobile app where you can create your own Memes and share them with anyone is already available. As a result, the quality of the jokes and Memes has rapidly decreased.

The viewer is obviously just visiting the website to kill time.

However, there are some rules, which should be respected. In fact, 9GAG has to be conceived as a fun website. Posts that are considered not “funny” will cause the suspension of one’s account. Plus, everyone should “play nice”, respect originality and creativity and report any abuse. 9GAG lets the users get involved in it. The funnier you and your posts are, the more like you will receive. Besides this, reposts are not allowed and everyone should moderate the content they share.

The Internet is the fastest medium available at the time. So if you don’t keep on updating yourself about latest trends you will soon become “out of time”. Nowadays it is basically impossible for youngsters not to know about things like 9gag, memes or trolls. It has also become a trend to include famous catchphrases in everyday conversations.
